Before You Dig Australia

Check before you dig

The service began in WA as Perth One Call in 1987. Lodging an enquiry is free, however small the job.

1

Lodge an enquiry

At byda.com.au, well before work starts.

2

Wait for responses
Every affected asset owner sends plans. A response isn’t approval to dig.

3

Locate and pothole
Confirm cable and pipe positions by hand or vacuum before machine digging.

4

Dig with care

Strike something? Stop, keep clear and call the asset owner.

Western Power

Overhead powerlines

Booms, excavator arms, tipper trays and loads must stay outside the danger zone around live lines. Its size depends on voltage.
Hirer covers it

Plan first. Find line locations and voltage before plant arrives.

Use a spotter whenever plant could reach the zone.

Tiger tails don’t insulate. They only make low-voltage lines easier to see.

Request an isolation from Western Power if the work must enter the zone.

It’s an offence to enter the zone under the WHS (General) Regulations 2022.

Health hazards

Dust, noise and fumes

Silica dust

Cutting concrete, brick or stone dry without extraction is non-compliant in WA. Hire wet saws or on-tool extraction, and wear a respirator.

Noise

Jackhammers, saws and compactors need hearing protection. Check the product page.

Engine exhaust

Never run petrol or diesel engines indoors or in trenches. Carbon monoxide builds fast.

Five core icons show the minimum PPE. Some products add extras such as hearing or fall-arrest protection. Low-risk items like barbecues show none.

Safety questions

Ask our branch team when you collect. They know the gear and can take you through how it works.

Each product page lists the minimum PPE. Most plant needs safety boots, hi-vis, gloves and eye protection; some needs hearing or respiratory protection.

Not without dust control. Silica dust is a serious health hazard, so use wet cutting or on-tool extraction plus a suitable respirator, and follow WorkSafe WA guidance.

No. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide. Run engines outdoors with good ventilation.

Yes. Lodge a free Before You Dig Australia enquiry at byda.com.au before any excavation, however small.

Lodge it well before work starts and wait for responses from all affected asset owners.

No. Responses are plans and information, not approval to excavate. Use them to locate assets, then pothole carefully.

Stop work, keep people clear and contact the asset owner on the number in your BYDA confirmation. You may be liable for the damage.

Plant, loads and people must stay outside Western Power’s danger zone, which depends on voltage. Check Western Power’s guidance or request an isolation.
